Plainfield Machine Carbine Model Numbers (throughout production 1962-1978)

Model numbers were primarily based on the type of stock, wood finish, and sights or scope. All used the same receiver and internal parts. Barrel lengths were normally 18", however, several sport models used barrels of 20"-22" and 20" barrels were used for the Canadian market due to Canadian gun laws. The most common model sold was the PM 30 G Military model.

The eighteen model numbers found to date can be divided into six basic categories:

Military, Paratrooper, and Plainfielder models existed throughout production. Presentation models were available from about 1964-1970. The 22 PMC (5.7mm Johnson) models were introduced about 1964. The Plainfield Machine Enforcer model was manufactured only in 1978, during the transition as Iver Johnson took over the Plainfield Machine carbine manufacturing operations.

Model numbers shown in fliers, manuals, and price lists did not appear on the carbines themselves. Serial numbers ran consecutive regardless of model, with the exception of the 5.7mm Johnson models which are discussed further in the serial number section.

Plainfield M2 Carbines

Plainfield produced both an M2 carbine and an M2 carbine kit for converting the carbine to selective fire. These carbines were sold to law enforcement agencies, but also military forces of other nations in Third World countries.

Small Arms Today, 2nd Edition (1988), by Edward Ezell provides a country by country listing of small arms used throughout the world. On page 233 under South Korea, Ezell indicates between 1976-1978 the U.S. State Department licensed the delivery of 374 commercially made M2 carbines by the Plainfield Manufacturing Company for the Korean police. On page 249 under Liberia, Ezell indicates Fargo International delivered 10 Plainfield M2 carbines to the National Police in 1978. During both these time periods Plainfield was owned by Iver Johnson Arm's. The State Department approved/denied sales of newly U.S. manufactured weapons for export to foreign nations direct from the U.S. manufacturer.
