Post WWII Commercially Manufactured M1 Carbines (U.S.A.)

Owners, Your Assistance is Needed Please

Research Project #1

I am trying to identify which serial numbers were manufactured or sold in a particular time period. If you have any of the following information, it would be great assistance in sorting this out.

(A) I am trying to locate owners who purchased their Universal carbine when it was new and can remember the month and year.

(B) If your carbine still has the original box, manual, or other items that have a name and address, I'm trying to identify which carbines were sold under which name. This also helps to pinpoint the time periods a carbine was made.

(C) I am on a constant hunt for catalogs, manuals, sales fliers, etc for all of the commercially manufactured carbines. If you have one of these items, please consider sharing a copy. I don't collect these items, I'm interested in the information they contain so I can share it here.

If you have this information and are willing to share, please contact me...

Research Project #2

I am maintaining a list of serial numbers that indicate when Universal made certain changes to their carbines, in an attempt to identify when these changes took place. Sometimes this also helps to identify a possible date of manufacture. If you wouldn't mind e-mailing me with a few pieces of information about your carbine, it would be of great assistance.

Below are questions numbered 1-6. Each number has one or more pictures showing what I'm looking for. Each picture is identified by a letter. All you need to do is e-mail me with the question numbers 1-6, and indicate the answer (a, b, c, etc) after the number. Here's an example you can copy/paste into your e-mail and edit it to correctly match your carbine.

EXAMPLE

[1] 3864xx
[2] 00-99 or none
[3] A B C
[4] A B
[5] A B C
[6] A B none

[1] What is the complete serial number, except for the last 2 digits (i.e. 123xx)

[2] On the left side of the receiver below the stock line, what are the numbers stamped in the side of the receiver? If none, please indicate "none".

Numbers on this receiver are 44, yours may be higher or farther left/right

[3] Is "Universal" on the receiver behind the rear sight [A], center between the rear sight and bolt [B], or on the front of the receiver [C]?

Note: 256 Ferret is in position [C] for the .256 Ferret model

[4] Look at the bottom of the carbine. Is the stock cut for the trigger housing narrower in the trigger area [A] or rectangular [B]?

[5] On the slide by the handle, is the slide solid [A], has a hole with a screw to the left [B], has a hole with a rectangle to the left [C]?
